Sourdough Flour Tortillas

🌮 Soft Sourdough Flour Tortillas

Soft, flexible, and slightly tangy, these homemade sourdough flour tortillas are a delicious way to use sourdough starter. They’re perfect for tacos, wraps, quesadillas, or simply enjoying warm with butter.

🛒 Ingredients

  • 1 cup active sourdough starter

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter

  • ½ cup warm water, plus more if needed

👩‍🍳 How to Make Them

1. Make the Dough

In a large bowl, combine the sourdough starter, flour, salt, olive oil, and warm water. Mix until a soft dough forms.

Knead for about 3–5 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.

2. Let It Rest

Cover the dough and let it rest at room temperature for about 30 minutes. For a stronger sourdough flavor, you can let it ferment longer according to your starter and kitchen temperature.

3. Divide the Dough

Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and roll each portion into a smooth ball.

Cover them and let them rest for another 10–15 minutes. This makes them easier to roll.

4. Roll the Tortillas

Lightly flour your work surface and roll each dough ball into a thin circle.

Try to make them as evenly thin as possible so they cook consistently.

5. Cook

Heat a dry skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat.

Place one tortilla in the hot pan and cook for about 30–60 seconds, or until small bubbles appear. Flip and cook the other side for another 30–60 seconds.

Don’t overcook them, or they may become stiff.

6. Keep Them Soft

Place the cooked tortillas in a clean kitchen towel or covered container while you finish cooking the rest. The trapped steam helps keep them soft and flexible.

🌮 Serving Ideas

Use your sourdough tortillas for:

  • Tacos

  • Breakfast wraps

  • Quesadillas

  • Chicken or beef wraps

  • Burritos

  • Homemade tortilla chips

💡 Helpful Tip

If your tortillas keep shrinking while you’re rolling them, let the dough balls rest for another 10–15 minutes. This allows the gluten to relax and makes rolling much easier.

Soft, homemade, slightly tangy, and perfect for filling with all your favorite ingredients! 🌮
