Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken
Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken is a cozy, flavorful meal that combines tender chicken with sweet onions, savory broth, and melted cheese. The slow cooker does most of the work, allowing the chicken to become tender while the onions and sauce develop a rich French onion-inspired flavor.
Ingredients
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère, Swiss, or mozzarella cheese
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, optional
Instructions
- Prepare the onions: Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for about 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they soften and begin to turn golden.
- Season the chicken: Season both sides of the chicken breasts with garlic powder, thyme, salt, and black pepper.
- Layer the slow cooker: Place the cooked onions in the bottom of the slow cooker. Arrange the seasoned chicken breasts on top.
- Add the sauce: Pour the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce over the chicken and onions. Gently move the chicken around so some of the liquid reaches the bottom of the cooker.
- Cook: Cover and cook on LOW for 4–6 hours or until the chicken is tender and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
- Add the cheese: Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the chicken during the final 10–15 minutes of cooking. Cover again and allow the cheese to melt completely.
- Finish and serve: Carefully transfer the chicken to plates and spoon plenty of the flavorful onions and sauce over the top. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
Helpful Tips
For the best flavor, take a little extra time to brown the onions before adding them to the slow cooker. You can also use chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts; they tend to stay especially tender during slow cooking.
Serving Ideas
Serve this French onion chicken with mashed potatoes, rice, roasted vegetables, green beans, or crusty bread. The savory onion sauce is delicious spooned over the side dishes.
