Clear your throat and lungs of mucus with this recipe – just 2 ingredients

Clear Your Throat and Lungs of Mucus With This 2-Ingredient Recipe

If you’re dealing with mucus or phlegm, a warm drink can soothe an irritated throat and help you stay hydrated, but no simple recipe can literally “clean” or detox your lungs. Persistent mucus should be evaluated for its underlying cause.

The 2 Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water

  • 1–2 teaspoons honey

1. Prepare the Drink

Warm the water until it is comfortably warm, not scalding. Stir in the honey until dissolved.

2. Sip Slowly

Drink it slowly, particularly when your throat feels irritated or you’re coughing. The warmth can be soothing, while adequate hydration can help prevent mucus from becoming overly thick.

3. What Honey Can Do

Honey may help reduce coughing and soothe throat irritation in adults and children over 1 year old. It doesn’t remove mucus from the lungs or treat the infection causing it.

4. Stay Hydrated

Drink fluids regularly throughout the day unless you’ve been told by a healthcare professional to restrict fluids. Water, warm broth, and caffeine-free drinks are other options.

5. Help With Nasal Mucus

If the mucus is actually coming from the nose and draining into the throat, saline nasal spray or a properly prepared saline rinse may provide more benefit than a homemade drink.

6. Avoid Smoke

Cigarettes, secondhand smoke, and other airway irritants can increase coughing and mucus production. Avoiding them is one of the most useful steps for respiratory health.

7. Don’t Use Very Hot Steam

Although steam may feel soothing, very hot steam can cause burns. A warm shower or properly maintained humidifier is a safer option.

When Mucus Needs Medical Attention

Contact a healthcare professional if phlegm or coughing persists for several weeks, repeatedly returns, or comes with fever, wheezing, unexplained weight loss, or persistent hoarseness.

Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, coughing up blood, confusion, or blue/gray lips.

Bottom Line

Warm water + honey is a simple comfort drink that may soothe your throat and cough. It isn’t a lung-cleansing treatment, but staying hydrated and addressing the actual cause of persistent mucus can help you recover more effectively.

Never give honey to a child under 1 year old.
