🍲 Wendy’s-Style Chili
A hearty, thick, meaty chili inspired by the classic Wendy’s Chili—loaded with ground beef, beans, tomatoes, and warm spices. It’s easy to make at home and tastes even better the next day.
🥩 Ingredients
For the Chili
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14–15 oz) diced tomatoes
- 1 can (14–15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 can (15 oz) pinto beans, drained and rinsed
- 1½ cups beef broth or water
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp paprika
- ½ tsp dried oregano
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½–1 tsp salt, to taste
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- 1–2 tsp brown sugar, optional
- 1 tbsp oil, if needed
👩🍳 Instructions
1. Brown the Beef
Heat a large pot over medium-high heat.
Add the ground beef and cook for about 6–8 minutes, breaking it apart with a spoon until thoroughly browned.
Drain excess fat if necessary.
2. Add the Vegetables
Add the diced onion and bell pepper.
Cook for 4–5 minutes, until softened.
Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30–60 seconds.
3. Add the Tomatoes and Beans
Stir in:
- Diced tomatoes
- Tomato sauce
- Kidney beans
- Pinto beans
- Tomato paste
- Beef broth
Mix everything well.
4. Add the Seasonings
Stir in the chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, black pepper, salt, garlic powder, and onion powder.
Add a little brown sugar if you prefer the slightly sweet flavor associated with restaurant-style chili.
5. Simmer
Bring the chili to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low.
Cover partially and simmer for 45–60 minutes, stirring occasionally.
For a thicker, richer chili, simmer uncovered for the final 15–20 minutes.
6. Taste and Adjust
Taste before serving and adjust:
- Salt for more flavor
- Chili powder for more heat
- Cumin for a deeper smoky flavor
- Brown sugar for mild sweetness
- Water or broth if it’s too thick
🧀 How to Serve It
Serve hot with your favorite toppings:
- Shredded cheddar cheese
- Sour cream
- Chopped green onions
- Diced jalapeños
- Crackers
- Hot sauce
⭐ Tips for Better Chili
Don’t rush the simmer. The longer the chili gently cooks, the more the flavors blend.
Don’t make it too watery. Start with less broth and add more if necessary.
For a smoother texture: Mash a small portion of the beans against the side of the pot while simmering.
For even better flavor: Refrigerate leftovers overnight and reheat the next day. Chili often tastes richer after the flavors have had time to develop.
🌶️ Easy Spice Adjustment
For mild chili, use about 1 tbsp chili powder and no cayenne.
For medium heat, add ½ tsp cayenne or a chopped jalapeño.
For spicy chili, add extra chili powder, cayenne, or hot peppers to taste.
Result: A thick, comforting bowl of beef-and-bean chili with tomatoes, peppers, and savory spices—perfect with shredded cheddar and crackers.
