Texas Toast Patty Melt
This Texas Toast Patty Melt is a hearty, crispy, cheesy sandwich made with seasoned ground beef, sweet caramelized onions, melted cheese, and thick slices of buttery Texas toast. It’s simple enough for a weeknight meal but delivers the classic diner-style comfort of a delicious patty melt.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 8 slices thick Texas toast
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 slices cheddar cheese
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
Instructions
- Caramelize the onions: Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden brown. Set aside.
- Prepare the patties: Place the ground beef in a bowl and mix gently with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Divide the mixture into four thin patties slightly larger than the bread slices.
- Cook the burgers: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties for about 3–4 minutes per side, or until fully cooked. During the final minute, place a slice of Swiss cheese and a slice of cheddar on each patty and allow them to melt.
- Make the sauce: In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard. Stir until smooth and creamy.
- Butter the Texas toast: Spread butter on one side of each slice of Texas toast.
- Toast the bread: Place the bread butter-side down in a skillet over medium heat. Cook until golden and crisp. Toast the other side briefly if desired.
- Assemble the melts: Spread the sauce on the inside of the toasted bread. Place a cheesy beef patty on four slices, then top generously with the caramelized onions. Cover with the remaining slices of toast.
- Crisp the sandwiches: Return the assembled sandwiches to the skillet and cook for another 1–2 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden and the cheese is completely melted.
- Serve: Cut each patty melt in half and serve immediately while the bread is crisp and the cheese is warm and gooey.
Helpful Tips
Cook the onions slowly over medium-low heat for the best flavor. Don’t press down too hard on the beef patties while they cook, as this can squeeze out their juices.
Serving Ideas
Serve your Texas Toast Patty Melt with crispy fries, onion rings, coleslaw, or a simple side salad. A few pickles on the side also make a great addition.
