Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak

Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak

Tender, flavorful beef patties cooked slowly in a rich mushroom-and-onion gravy. It’s an easy comfort-food dinner that goes perfectly with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Ingredients

  • 1½ lb (680 g) ground beef

  • 1 egg

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 8 oz (225 g) mushrooms, sliced

  • 1 small onion, sliced

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 can (10.5 oz / 300 g) condensed cream of mushroom soup

  • 1 packet (about 1 oz / 28 g) brown gravy mix

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1. Make the Patties

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce.

Mix gently until combined. Form into 5–6 oval-shaped patties.

2. Brown the Patties

Heat a little oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for about 2–3 minutes per side.

They don’t need to be fully cooked at this stage—the slow cooker will finish them.

3. Make the Gravy

In a bowl, whisk together the beef broth, cream of mushroom soup, gravy mix, and 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce until smooth.

4. Add Everything to the Slow Cooker

Place the sliced onion and mushrooms in the bottom of the slow cooker.

Arrange the browned beef patties on top.

Pour the gravy mixture over the patties, making sure they’re well coated.

5. Slow Cook

Cover and cook:

  • LOW: 5–6 hours

  • HIGH: 2½–3½ hours

Cook until the patties are thoroughly cooked and tender. Ground beef should reach 160°F (71°C) internally.

6. Serve

Carefully spoon the Salisbury steaks onto plates and cover them generously with the mushroom gravy.

Serve with:

  • Mashed potatoes

  • Egg noodles

  • Rice

  • Steamed green beans

  • Roasted vegetables

Helpful Tips

For Extra Flavor

Browning the patties before slow cooking adds a deeper, richer flavor and helps them hold their shape.

For Thicker Gravy

If the gravy is thinner than you like, transfer it to a saucepan after cooking and simmer it for a few minutes, or thicken it with a small cornstarch slurry.

Don’t Overmix the Beef

Mix the ingredients just until combined. Overworking the meat can make the Salisbury steak dense instead of tender.

Result: Tender beef patties, savory mushrooms, sweet onions, and rich gravy—all made in one slow cooker.
