❤️ Don’t Lose This Recipe!
A classic comfort-food dinner featuring tender, seasoned beef patties smothered in a rich, savory onion gravy. It pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
🥩 Ingredients
For the Salisbury Steaks
- 1½ lb (680 g) ground beef
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup finely diced onion
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp ketchup
For the Onion Gravy
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp cooking oil
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
👩🍳 Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Make the Beef Mixture
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
Mix just until everything is combined. Avoid overmixing, which can make the patties tough.
2. Shape the Steaks
Divide the mixture into 4–6 portions and shape each into an oval patty about ½–¾ inch thick.
3. Brown the Patties
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the patties and cook for approximately 3–4 minutes per side, until nicely browned.
They don’t need to be completely cooked through at this stage. Remove them to a plate.
4. Caramelize the Onions
Reduce the heat to medium and add the butter.
Add the sliced onions and cook for approximately 8–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden brown.
For deeper flavor, allow them to cook a little longer over medium-low heat.
5. Make the Gravy
Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir continuously for about 1 minute.
Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps.
Add Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, garlic powder, black pepper, and a little salt if needed.
6. Return the Steaks
Place the browned Salisbury steaks back into the skillet.
Spoon some gravy and onions over the top.
Cover and simmer over low heat for approximately 10–15 minutes, or until the beef is fully cooked and the gravy has thickened.
For ground beef, use a food thermometer and cook to 160°F (71°C) in the center.
🥔 Best Things to Serve With It
The onion gravy is especially good over:
- Creamy mashed potatoes
- Buttered egg noodles
- Steamed rice
- Roasted potatoes
- Green beans
- Peas and carrots
- Dinner rolls
⭐ Extra Flavor Tip
For an especially rich gravy, let the onions become deep golden brown before adding the flour, and scrape the browned bits from the bottom of the skillet when adding the broth. Those little browned bits provide a lot of the dish’s flavor.
Save this one: tender beef + caramelized onions + rich brown gravy = classic comfort food. ❤️
