If You Always Sleep on Your Right Side, You Should Know This
Sleeping on your right side is not necessarily harmful. For many people, side sleeping is comfortable and can be a good sleeping position. However, there are a few things worth knowing.
1. Shoulder Discomfort
Keeping the same shoulder under pressure for hours can sometimes cause soreness or stiffness. Changing sides or adjusting your pillow can help.
2. Neck Alignment
A pillow that is too high or too low can bend your neck during sleep. Choose a pillow that keeps your head and neck roughly aligned with your spine.
3. Acid Reflux
For people who experience nighttime acid reflux, sleeping on the left side may reduce reflux symptoms more than sleeping on the right side.
4. Snoring and Sleep Apnea
Side sleeping can sometimes be preferable to sleeping flat on your back because it may help keep the airway more open. However, persistent loud snoring, choking during sleep, or significant daytime sleepiness should be evaluated for sleep apnea.
5. Pressure on the Hip
If your hip becomes painful from lying on one side, try placing a pillow between your knees or changing positions.
6. You Don’t Have to Force Yourself to Change
If you sleep comfortably on your right side and wake up feeling well, there is generally no need to stop simply because you prefer that position.
Bottom Line
Right-side sleeping is usually fine. The most important factors are comfort, good neck and spine alignment, and whether you have conditions such as acid reflux or sleep apnea.
