Clear Th into warm—not boiling—water and sip slowly. You can drink it once or twice a day asroat and Chest Mucus: A Simple 2-Ingredient Drink
There isn’t a two-ingredient recipe proven to “clean” or detox the lungs. However, a simple warm drink may soothe an irritated throat and make thick mucus feel easier to clear.
1. Warm Water + Honey
Ingredients:
-
1 cup warm water
-
1–2 teaspoons honey
How to Use It
Mix the honey into warm—not boiling—water and sip slowly. You can drink it once or twice a day as needed.
How It May Help
Warm water can soothe the throat and help with hydration. Honey may reduce coughing and throat irritation. It doesn’t remove mucus from the lungs or treat the underlying cause of chronic phlegm.
Important Safety Note
Never give honey to a child under 1 year old because of the risk of infant botulism. People with diabetes should also consider the added sugar from honey.
Other Helpful Steps
-
Drink enough water throughout the day.
-
Avoid cigarettes, vaping, and secondhand smoke.
-
A saline nasal spray or rinse can help when mucus is coming from postnasal drip.
-
If indoor air is dry, a clean cool-mist humidifier may provide relief.
When to See a Doctor
If mucus persists for several weeks, repeatedly returns, or is accompanied by wheezing, fever, shortness of breath, chest pain, or unexplained weight loss, get medical advice. Coughing up blood or having severe difficulty breathing requires urgent medical attention.
Remember: A home drink can provide symptom relief, but persistent mucus needs attention to its underlying cause—such as allergies, reflux, asthma, smoking, or a respiratory infection.
