Say Goodbye to Flies, Mosquitoes & Cockroaches by Boiling These Leaves 🌿🦟🪳

If you want a natural-smelling home remedy to help discourage household insects, you can make a simple herbal spray using bay leaves. The strong aroma may help repel some insects temporarily, but it won’t reliably eliminate an infestation.

🌿 Bay Leaf Repellent Recipe

You’ll need:

  • 10–15 dried bay leaves
  • 500 ml (about 2 cups) water
  • A small saucepan
  • A spray bottle
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon mild dish soap

How to prepare it

  1. Add the bay leaves to the water.
    Put 10–15 dried bay leaves into a saucepan with about 500 ml of water.
  2. Boil the leaves.
    Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for approximately 10–15 minutes.
  3. Let it cool.
    Turn off the heat and allow the liquid to cool completely.
  4. Strain it.
    Remove the leaves and strain the liquid so that small pieces don’t clog your spray bottle.
  5. Transfer to a spray bottle.
    Pour the cooled liquid into a clean spray bottle. If desired, add a small amount of mild dish soap and shake gently.

Where to use it

Lightly spray around areas where insects commonly appear, such as:

  • Around doors and window frames
  • Along kitchen edges
  • Near garbage bins
  • Around cracks and gaps
  • Behind or underneath appliances
  • Near drains and other insect-prone areas

Avoid spraying directly onto food, food-preparation surfaces, electrical outlets, or delicate fabrics.

🪳 For cockroaches, do this too

A homemade leaf spray isn’t enough if you already have a cockroach infestation. Remove food and water sources, keep garbage covered, clean crumbs and grease, fix leaks, and seal cracks and gaps. Properly placed cockroach bait can be considerably more effective than relying on herbal remedies.

The most effective prevention is to remove standing water, keep doors and windows screened, and use appropriate insect repellents.
