Are You Urinating a Lot at Night? Here’s Why and What You Can Do About It

Waking up during the night to urinate is called nocturia. It becomes more common with age, but frequent nighttime urination can have several causes and shouldn’t automatically be considered a normal part of aging. NIDDK+1

1. Drinking Too Much Before Bed

Large amounts of water or other fluids in the evening can increase the amount of urine produced during the night.

What to do: Stay properly hydrated during the day and, if your doctor agrees, avoid drinking large amounts during the few hours before bedtime. Don’t restrict fluids excessively because dehydration can be harmful. NIDDK

2. Caffeine in the Evening

Coffee, tea, chocolate, energy drinks, and some soft drinks contain caffeine, which can contribute to urinary symptoms and interfere with sleep.

Try: Choosing caffeine-free drinks later in the day. NIDDK

3. Alcohol

Alcohol can increase urine production and may make nighttime bathroom trips more frequent.

4. An Enlarged Prostate

In men, benign prostate enlargement can cause frequent nighttime urination. Other symptoms can include a weak urine stream, difficulty starting, dribbling, or difficulty completely emptying the bladder. NIDDK

5. Diabetes

High blood sugar can increase urine production. Frequent urination accompanied by unusual thirst, fatigue, or unexplained weight loss should be discussed with a healthcare professional. NIDDK

6. Swollen Legs

Fluid that collects in the legs during the day can move back into circulation when you lie down, potentially increasing urine production at night. Persistent leg swelling should be evaluated to determine its cause.

7. Certain Medicines

Some medicines, particularly diuretics or “water pills,” increase urine production.

Don’t change the dose or timing of prescribed medication without speaking with your doctor or pharmacist. NIDDK

8. Bladder Problems

Overactive bladder, urinary infections, and other urinary conditions can cause urgency and frequent nighttime urination. NIDDK+1

9. Sleep Problems

Sometimes you wake up because of insomnia, sleep apnea, pain, or another problem and then notice that your bladder is full. In other cases, the urinary problem itself is waking you.

Simple Things You Can Try

  • Keep a 2–3 day bladder diary recording drinks and bathroom visits.

  • Reduce caffeine and alcohol in the evening.

  • Use the bathroom immediately before bed.

  • If your legs swell during the day, ask your healthcare professional whether elevating them is appropriate.

  • Keep the route to the bathroom well lit to reduce the risk of falling.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Talk to a healthcare professional if nighttime urination is new, worsening, or regularly disrupting your sleep. Also seek medical advice if you have painful urination, blood in the urine, difficulty emptying your bladder, fever, excessive thirst, or unexplained weight loss. NIDDK

Bottom Line

Occasionally waking once to urinate can happen, but repeated nighttime trips deserve attention when they interfere with sleep or are accompanied by other symptoms. Finding the underlying cause is more useful than simply trying to drink less water.
