If You’re Alone During a Heart Attack, These Immediate Steps Could Save Your Life
A suspected heart attack is a medical emergency. If you are alone and develop symptoms that could indicate a heart attack, the most important thing is to get emergency medical help immediately.
1. Call Emergency Services Immediately
Call your local emergency number as soon as possible. Do not wait to see whether the symptoms go away.
Put the phone on speaker so you can communicate with the dispatcher while keeping your hands free.
2. Stop and Sit Somewhere Safe
Stop whatever you’re doing and sit or lie in a comfortable position with your upper body supported.
Avoid walking around unnecessarily.
3. Unlock the Door
If you can do it safely, unlock your front door so emergency responders can get inside quickly. Then return to a safe place and wait for help.
4. Don’t Drive Yourself to the Hospital
Even if you think you can manage the drive, a heart attack can cause dangerous complications suddenly. Emergency medical personnel can begin care while transporting you.
5. Consider Aspirin Only When Appropriate
For some adults with suspected heart attack, emergency medical professionals may advise chewing aspirin while waiting for help.
Do not take aspirin if you’re allergic to it, have been told to avoid it, have certain bleeding problems, or have another reason it may be unsafe. Don’t delay calling emergency services while looking for aspirin.
6. Use Prescribed Nitroglycerin as Directed
If your doctor has prescribed nitroglycerin for chest pain, use it exactly as previously instructed.
Never take someone else’s medication.
7. Stay as Calm and Still as Possible
Try to breathe normally and avoid physical exertion while waiting for emergency help. Keep your phone nearby and follow the dispatcher’s instructions.
Know the Warning Signs
Heart attack symptoms can include:
-
Pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain in the chest
-
Pain or discomfort spreading to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen
-
Shortness of breath
-
Cold sweating
-
Nausea or vomiting
-
Light-headedness or unusual weakness
Symptoms aren’t always dramatic, and they can differ between individuals.
If You Become Unresponsive
If another person finds you unconscious and you’re not breathing normally, they should call emergency services, begin CPR, and use an AED if one is available.
Bottom Line
If you suspect a heart attack while alone, call emergency services first, stop exerting yourself, unlock the door if possible, and follow the dispatcher’s instructions. Don’t rely on home remedies or try to “sleep it off.”
If these symptoms are happening to you right now, call your local emergency medical service immediately.
