Clear Your Throat and Lungs of Mucus With This 2-Ingredient Recipe
There is no two-ingredient drink proven to “clean” or detox the lungs. However, a simple warm drink can soothe an irritated throat and help you stay hydrated, which may make thick mucus easier to clear.
The 2 Ingredients
-
1 cup warm water
-
1–2 teaspoons honey
How to Make It
Pour warm water into a cup and stir in the honey until completely dissolved. Sip it slowly while warm.
Why It May Help
Warm water helps maintain hydration and can soothe throat irritation. Honey may reduce coughing and provide temporary relief from an irritated throat.
It does not remove mucus from the lungs or cure conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, allergies, reflux, or respiratory infections.
For Chest Mucus
If you have mucus in your chest, also try:
-
Drink water regularly throughout the day.
-
Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke.
-
Use a clean cool-mist humidifier if the air is dry.
-
Get gentle movement when you’re well enough.
-
If nasal drainage is causing throat mucus, saline nasal spray or a properly prepared saline rinse may help.
Don’t Use Very Hot Steam
Steam may feel soothing, but inhaling very hot steam can cause burns. A warm shower or appropriately used humidifier is safer.
Important Safety Note
Never give honey to a child under 1 year old. If you have diabetes, remember that honey contains sugar.
When to See a Doctor
Persistent phlegm should not simply be treated with home remedies. Get medical advice if it lasts several weeks, keeps returning, or is accompanied by fever, wheezing, or shortness of breath.
Seek urgent medical attention for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, coughing up blood, confusion, or blue/gray lips.
Bottom Line
Honey and warm water can be a comforting home remedy for throat irritation and cough, but they should not be promoted as a way to literally “clean” the lungs. The best treatment for ongoing mucus is to identify and treat its underlying cause.
