How to Clean Between the Glass on an Oven Door
If grease and crumbs have somehow gotten between the two panes of your oven door, you can often clean them without taking the entire door apart.
The simple trick
- Make sure the oven is completely cool and unplug it if possible.
- Check the bottom edge of the oven door for the ventilation slots or openings between the glass panels.
- Make a long, flexible cleaning tool by wrapping a microfiber cloth around a thin, flat object such as a yardstick or flexible duster. Secure the cloth tightly so it can’t come loose.
- Lightly dampen the cloth with warm water and a small amount of dish soap. Don’t soak it.
- Carefully slide the cloth through the appropriate opening and wipe between the glass panels.
- For stubborn grease, use a little diluted dish soap, then make another pass with a clean, damp cloth.
- Finish with a dry microfiber cloth to remove moisture and streaks.
Important safety point
Don’t force anything into the door or pry the glass apart. Oven-door designs vary considerably, and some have removable panels while others don’t. A forceful approach can damage the glass, seals, or hinges.
Also avoid spraying cleaner directly into openings in the oven door. Liquid can run into areas where it shouldn’t be and potentially damage components.
If your oven has a removable inner glass panel, the manufacturer’s instructions are the safest way to remove and clean it.
Tip: Before trying the cloth trick, look up the cleaning instructions for your specific oven model. Some manufacturers specifically warn against inserting objects into the door vents.
