If someone has a stroke, here’s what you should do immediately before the ambulance arrives

Posted on January 16, 2026 by Admin

Here’s clear, life-saving guidance on what to do immediately if someone is having a stroke, before the ambulance arrives. Acting fast can save their life and reduce brain damage.

If Someone Is Having a Stroke: What to Do Immediately

🚨 1. Call Emergency Services RIGHT AWAY

  • Do not wait to see if symptoms go away
  • Tell the dispatcher you suspect a stroke
  • Note the exact time symptoms started (this is critical for treatment)

🧠 2. Use the FAST Test

Look for these warning signs:

F – Face:

  • Ask them to smile
  • One side droops?

A – Arms:

  • Ask them to raise both arms
  • One arm weak or drifting down?

S – Speech:

  • Ask them to repeat a simple sentence
  • Slurred or strange speech?

T – Time:

  • If you see ANY of these → call emergency services immediately

🛑 3. Keep Them Safe and Still

  • Help them sit or lie down
  • If lying down, slightly elevate the head
  • Loosen tight clothing (tie, collar)

❌ 4. Do NOT Give Food, Drink, or Medication

  • Do NOT give aspirin (the stroke may be hemorrhagic)
  • Do not give water or food (risk of choking)

👀 5. Monitor Them Closely

  • Stay with them
  • Watch breathing and consciousness
  • If they vomit, turn their head to the side

❤️ 6. If They Stop Breathing or Lose Consciousness

  • Begin CPR if you are trained
  • Follow emergency dispatcher instructions

⏱️ Why Speed Matters

  • Stroke treatment works best within the first 3–4.5 hours
  • Every minute can mean millions of brain cells lost

🧠 Remember

Even if symptoms seem mild or go away:
👉 It is still a medical emergency

If you want, I can also:

  • Create a one-image FAST emergency guide to save on your phone
  • Explain the difference between stroke and heart attack symptoms
  • Share what NOT to say or do during a stroke

Just tell me.
